D-Orbit has been awarded contracts through Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan to deliver a small orbiting laboratory and test optical intersatellite links. The contracts, worth 6 million euros ($6.54 million), were announced on June 22 and are part of Italy's efforts to advance its space capabilities.

D-Orbit will verify the performance of optical intersatellite links for an Earth observation constellation called IRIDE (International Report for Innovative Defense of Earth). The IRIDE constellation operates in low Earth orbit and comprises imaging payloads designed to monitor Italy's critical infrastructure, air quality, and meteorological conditions. To facilitate the testing of the optical intersatellite links, Italian startup Stellar Project will supply laser communications technology that will be integrated into D-Orbit's ION Satellite Carrier.

The optical intersatellite links being tested through this collaboration have the potential to enhance data communication capabilities and enable more efficient utilization of satellite resources.

D-Orbit, known for its innovative solutions in satellite deployment and in-orbit services, will leverage its expertise to carry out the testing and verification activities. The company's small orbiting laboratory will provide a controlled environment for conducting these assessments, ensuring accurate results and contributing to the overall advancement of optical intersatellite link technology.

The contracts awarded to D-Orbit highlight the importance of public-private partnerships in driving innovation and development within the space industry and the contracts awarded, demonstrate Italy's commitment to advancing its space industry and leveraging satellite technology for the benefit of critical infrastructure monitoring and environmental assessment.
