SES Space & Defense, the U.S. arm of Luxembourg-based satellite operator SES, has secured a $46.8 million contract with the U.S. Air Force.

The multi-year agreement, awarded by the U.S. Air Force’s Air Combat Command, will provide essential geostationary (GEO) Ku-band satellite communications services for the command’s remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) training and testing program.

SES, a prominent player in the satellite communications industry, operates a robust fleet of over 70 satellites in both geostationary and medium Earth orbits.

Under this new contract, SES will utilize its GEO high-throughput satellites to ensure comprehensive ground-to-air and air-to-ground transmissions coverage. The service area encompasses the continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska, and the Pacific Ocean, ensuring extensive and reliable communication support for the Air Combat Command's needs.

The contract extends beyond basic communication services, incorporating provisions for network management and monitoring support. This holistic approach will help maintain the integrity and efficiency of the communication services provided, ensuring that the U.S. Air Force's RPA training and testing program runs smoothly.

The Air Combat Command’s RPA training and testing program is a critical component of the U.S. Air Force's operational preparedness. Designed to train pilots for a variety of missions and combat scenarios, this program equips them to operate effectively in both national and international airspace. The addition of reliable satellite communication services from SES will enhance the program’s capabilities, providing robust support for pilot training and mission readiness.

The strategic importance of this contract cannot be overstated. As RPAs become increasingly integral to modern military operations, the need for dependable communication systems is paramount. SES's high-throughput satellites will play a crucial role in facilitating the effective training of RPA pilots, ensuring they are prepared for the complexities of contemporary combat environments.

SES Space & Defense's successful bid for this contract underscores the company's expertise and reliability in providing advanced satellite communication solutions. By securing this agreement, SES reinforces its position as a key partner to the U.S. military, contributing to the enhancement of national security and operational efficiency.
